Beginner, Intermediate and Adult Ballet
Ages 18 - adult. A fun contemporary ballet class for the adult with some ballet knowledge. Great exercise. Attire: leotard, jazz pants/leggings (skirts, shorts and sweat pants may be worn), ballet shoes. In the Spring session students in the Thursday class will have an opportunity to create a dance piece and perform in a year end dance concert. Please note: The Tuesday class is technique only and will not have the opportunity to perform in the spring.
Ages 16 - adult. A dance class for adults who love to move! If you have taken modern dance or ballet before -- or no dance at all but always wanted to -- this class is for you! The class will include basic modern warm-ups and movements as well as improvisation and following and creating choreography. As in all NMS dance classes, collaborative choreography, fun and expressive movement will be our focus. All levels are welcome.
Ages 18 - adult. This is a mixed-level tap class for the beginning or intermediate student. It will include a review of basic steps and rhythms used in fun and challenging combinations. Attire: comfortable, easy-moving clothing, tap shoes. Students in this class will be part of the Collaborative Choreography Initiative, where basic choreography techniques will be introduced. (Students in the Spring session will have an opportunity to create a dance piece and perform in a year end dance concert.)
Adult Jazz Classes
NEW! Mom's Jazz Class
Ages 18-adult Have you watched your child in a dance class and thought, "I wish I could do that"? This class is for you! A comfortable atmosphere for the adult student who may not have dance experience and is intimidated to take an adult dance class. Basic stretches, vocabulary, simple travel sequences and short combinations will be taught. It is at the discretion of the teaching artist and students as to whether this class will perform in the spring concert.
NEW! Adult Jazz
Ages 18-adult A comfortable atmosphere for the adult student who may not have dance experience and is intimidated to take an adult dance class. Exercise and Well-Being
Ages 18 - adult. Amrit Yoga classes for health and stress management. An integrative approach to postures (asanas), breath work (prana) and holistic lifestyle are presented to help manage life’s daily challenges. All levels are welcome. Please bring a yoga mat and a light shawl or blanket and wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
Exercise & Energize
Ages 18 - adult. This class is a mix of core conditioning, stretching and easy-to-follow movement designed to stretch, strengthen and energize you. Great for all ages and experience. The format and intensity will be tailored to fit the participants. Attire: comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
NEW! Dance Floor: Barre & Conditioning
Ages 18-Adult This class is designed to combine stretching, strength and dance technique in a non-impact, floor-based setting. Emphasis will be placed on proper alignment, turnout, full-body muscle strengthening and lengthening, with an emphasis on core work. This class is gentle yet effective, low impact and appropriate for dancers and non-dancers of any age. No previous experience necessary.
NEW! Contemporary Dance
Ages 16+ Contemporary Dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of modern, jazz and ballet. Dancers will work to increase strength, flexibility, control and balance with the emphasis being placed on developing the emotional or expressive qualities to tell a story through movement. Experimentation and collaboration will help the dancers to explore new choreographic possibilities. Students in this class will be part of the Collaborative Choreography Initiative where they will experiment with a variety of choreography techniques and build communication skills and confidence. In the Spring, students will have an opportunity to collaborate with fellow dancers, teaching artists and musicicans to create a dance piece to be performed in a year-end dance concert.
NEW! Dance Crash Course
Ages 18+ Interested in taking dance but not sure which genre you are interested in? This class will sample 4 dance genres - Ballet, Tap, Jazz and Hip Hop. Students will spend 4 or 5 weeks on each type of dance throughout the academic year. Proper technique, warm ups/stretching, dance vocabulary and small pieces of choreography will be covered for each genre. It is at the discretion of the teaching artist and students as to whether this class will perform in the spring concert.
NEW! Afro-Caribbean Dance
Ages 16-adult. Students will be exposed to traditional Dunham technique, encompassing technical modern, ballet and Afro-Caribbean folkloric movement, which gave birth to jazz and hip-hop dance as we know it. Students will learn variations of Dunham technique including the Dunham barre, center floor work and across-the-floor progressions via multi-genre choreography based on traditional African and Caribbean folklore dancing with ballet and modern techniques intertwined. Attire: Black leotard or tank top with black leggings or black jazz pants; full circle skirt (optional); bare feet.
Ages 18 and up. Get your sweat on in this high-energy dance/fitness class that is geared towards having fun and burning calories to uncomplicated movements. Move your body to upbeat rhythms, adapted from many popular dance crazes, in a safe and individualized environment. All levels welcome.
This free class offers people with Parkinson’s and related neurological disorders (along with partners and caregivers) the opportunity to explore and create movement in a variety of dance styles, accompanied by music. No dance experience is necessary and walkers, canes and wheelchairs are welcome. Classes are offered at three Connecticut locations Middletown, New Haven and New London. B.A.S.E.S (Breathe. Alignment. Stretch. Energize. Strengthen.) - Tentative
Ages 16-up. Are you interested in a stretch class for rejuvenation, circulation, increased /extreme flexibility? This class is for you. Using exercise science, anatomy, injury prevention, and technical dance body conditioning to increase range of motion and strength. Geared towards all levels and abilities from Professional to recreational to Lupus Warriors and Seniors. Attire: dance, yoga,fitness clothes that are fitted and allows you to stretch. Leotard, tank top, tights, leggings preferred. T-shirt and sweats permitted.
The Dance of Health - Tentative
Ages 18 - adult. Essential training exercises for t'ai chi ch'uan and chi kung. We will learn the internal art of cultivating and mobilizing the chi, the energy force that flows through all things. We will learn these principles through use of postural techniques; control of breath, body and mind; use of simple yoga postures, acupressure and self-massage techniques; awareness of chakra and Kundalini centers; and meditation techniques. This class is appropriate for most levels of physical abilities since many of these preparatory exercises can be done while holding onto a chair or even sometimes seated.
NEW! Surviving the Dance Floor - Tentative
Ages 18 - adult. You've survived the work week... let us teach you how to survive the dance floor! Learn basic dance moves like salsa, waltz and your favorite line dances in a friendly safe environment. Class attire: comfortable dance clothing, comfortable street shoes.
