Youth Dance Class Descriptions

Ballet (live accompaniment)

Pre-Ballet

PreBallet is an introduction to the very basics of dance and ballet vocabulary. This class is designed for children with the ability to sustain 30 (for ages 3-4) or 40 (for ages 4-5) minutes of focused activity. Children will discover creative expression and experience the fun of exploring the elements of dance: shape, size, speed and levels in space. Scarves, ribbons and hoops add to the joy of hopping, skipping, jumping and galloping. Students will share their discoveries in a fun year-end, in-class performance.

Ballet

Ages 6 - 8. Ballet age 6-8 is structured to build a foundation of basic ballet vocabulary and technique. This 60-minute class will focus on introducing vocabulary, alignment concepts, strength building, musicality and ballet class etiquette. Students in this class will be part of the Collaborative Choreography Initiative, where basic choreography techniques will be introduced. (Students in the Spring session will have an opportunity to create a dance piece and perform in a year-end dance concert.) 

Ages 9 - 12, 12 - 15, 15 - 18. Ballet classes are structured to continue to build upon basic ballet vocabulary. This 60-minute class will focus on alignment concepts, strength building and musicality. Students in these classes will be part of the Collaborative Choreography Initiative, where choreography techniques will be introduced. (Students in the Spring session will have an opportunity to create a dance piece and perform in a year-end dance concert.)

Ballet Ensemble

Ages 12 - 17. Students are encouraged to participate in dance ensembles as a supplement to their regular technique classes. Ensembles concentrate on choreographic techniques and performance of dance pieces. Dancers have the opportunity to perform in the Winter and Spring concerts. Interested students should speak with their teacher about qualifications prior to registering.

Modern Dance (live accompaniment)

The Modern Dance Program at NMS is designed to build a vocabulary base that inspires each student  to discover their creative expression. Dancers experience the fun of exploring shape, size, speed and different levels in space through fun exercises and experiments. They will cultivate a strong sense of self-awareness by moving through space alone, as well as with others and become comfortable responding with movement either with or without music. The experience is enhanced by the immediate response and collaboration of live accompaniment.

Creative Dance

Ages 4 - 5 1/2. A pre-modern dance class for children with the ability to sustain 40 minutes of focused activity. Children will discover creative expression and experience the fun of exploring the elements of dance: shape, size, speed and levels in space. Modern 

Ages 6 - 8, 9 - 11. The Modern curriculum is designed to continue to build a vocabulary base that fosters children’s creativity, to cultivate a strong sense of themselves moving and a comfort responding with movement with and without music. Students in this class will be part of the Collaborative Choreography Initiative, where choreography techniques will be introduced. (Students in the Spring session will have an opportunity to create a dance piece and perform in a year end dance concert.)

Jazz

Ages 6 - 8. Jazz age 6-8 is structured to build a foundation of basic jazz vocabulary and technique. This 60-minute class focuses on introducing vocabulary, alignment concepts, strength building, musicality and jazz class etiquette. Students in this class will be part of the Collaborative Choreography Initiative, where basic choreography techniques will be introduced. Ages 9 - 12. Students in this class will be part of the Collaborative Choreography Initiative, where basic choreography techniques will be introduced. (Students in the Spring session will have an opportunity to create a dance piece and perform in a year end dance concert.)

Ages 13 - 17. For students with jazz experience. Choreography borrows from Broadway and explores a wider range of steps and technique. Students in this class will be part of the Collaborative Choreography Initiative, where basic choreography techniques will be introduced. (Students in the Spring session will have an opportunity to create a dance piece and perform in a year end dance concert.)

Hip-Hop

Ages 6 - 8, 9 - 12, 13 - 17. A high-energy introduction to the funk/hip-hop culture, focusing on dance technique and sequence. Students in this class will be part of the Collaborative Choreography Initiative, where basic choreography techniques will be introduced. (Students in the Spring session will have an opportunity to create a dance piece and perform in a year-end dance concert.)

Tap

Intro to Tap

Ages 4 - 5 1/2. Intro to Tap introduces the very basics of tap vocabulary. This class is designed for children with the ability to sustain 40 minutes of focused activity. Tap

Ages 6 - 8. Tap age 6-10 is structured to build a foundation of basic tap vocabulary and technique. This 60-minute class will focus on introducing vocabulary, strength building, musicality and tap class etiquette. Ages 9 - 12. Tap age 9-11 continues to build a foundation of basic tap vocabulary and technique. This 60-minute class will focus on introducing new vocabulary, strength building, musicality and tap class etiquette. Students in this class will be part of the Collaborative Choreography Initiative, where basic choreography techniques will be introduced. (Students in the Spring session will have an opportunity to create a dance piece and perform in a year-end dance concert.)

Ages 13 - 17. Class will focus on more complex choreography and technique. Students in this class will be part of the Collaborative Choreography Initiative, where basic choreography techniques will be introduced. (Students in the Spring session will have an opportunity to create a dance piece and perform in a year-end dance concert.)

Musical Theater

Triple Threat

Dancers who can dance, sing and act are considered a “triple threat.” This class covers the basic skills of all three disciplines using improvisation, comedy, monologues, song and, of course, dance. Students will perform a piece incorporating all that they’ve learned. Costuming and set design will also be touched on.

NEW! Musical Theater Dance

Ages 11-17 This class will work on choreography from musicals and movies, utilizing movement ideas from these shows to create original choreography. This class will also teach the basics a dancer would need for the dance component of an audition.

NEW! Contemporary Dance

Ages 12-17 Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of modern, jazz, and ballet. Dancers will work to increase strength, flexibility, control and balance with the emphasis being placed on developing the emotional or expressive qualities to tell a story through movement. Experimentation and collaboration will help the dancers to explore new choreographic possibilities. Attire: dance clothes, soft soled jazz shoes or foot undies/thongs/paws. Some dance experience preferred.
