Music Ensembles

Ensemble experience helps you hone your rhythmic and listening skills, encourages teamwork and demands collaboration. You'll find ensemble participation to be one of the most rewarding and valuable aspects of music study.

Each year, NMS puts together more than 100 ensembles for young people and adults — all of which are showcased in a semi-annual festival of ensemble recitals. We'll work with you to create an ensemble by matching your interests and experience with other students.

The Ensemble Program also features several “play-ins,” which give instrumentalists a chance to play with many other musicians and exposes them to various musical styles and eras. Play-ins are open to the public and often free of charge. Watch for announcements in our Calendar & Events listings.

Each year, NMS sponsors select Premier Ensembles (e.g., woodwind or string quartet, brass quintet, piano trio, jazz combo) that are on call throughout the year to officially represent NMS in community performances. These ensembles are for advanced players. Placement is by audition. Auditions are held each June for the following school year. There is no ensemble charge for participation in these groups, although students not currently taking individual instruction at NMS pay a registration fee.
