About the Youth Ensembles

Since 1961, the Youth Ensembles Program at NMS has offered young musicians unparalleled opportunities to play with other high-achieving students, explore celebrated classical pieces and develop crucial performance skills, providing them an unforgettable creative experience while they make lifelong friends along the way.

The four auditioned ensembles – outlined below- are directed by professional conductors and rehearse weekly. The groups draw promising string, wind and percussion players from middle and high schools throughout southern Connecticut, and play in bi-annual concerts at Yale’s historic Battell Chapel.

Auditions for the upcoming season will take place: Mon., Aug. 28 - Sat. Sept. 2 at Neighborhood Music School, 100 Audubon St., New Haven. Please contact Patty Boczer at 203-624-5189 x11 for an audition appointment. Current enrollment at NMS is not required. There is no fee to audition. This year, we are offering a 50% off tuition discount to NEW GNHYE students, and full scholarships are available for select instruments

Youth Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Concert Orchestra, Concert Band
Based on 31/32 weeks per year
With NMS individual lesson:  $616 per year

Greater New Haven Youth Orchestra

One of the top youth ensembles in Connecticut, focusing on preparation of major symphonic works with several performances a year. The orchestra is for highly committed high school players. Students participate in special events and community performances.

Greater New Haven Symphonic Wind Ensemble

An advanced ensemble comprised of winds, brass and percussion players preforming traditional and contemporary works for large symphonic wind ensemble. This ensemble is also for highly committed high school players.

Greater New Haven Concert Orchestra

An orchestral experience for dedicated intermediate string, wind and percussion students. Generally for students grades seven and up with four years of individual lessons. Weekly rehearsals include string and wind sectionals. Previous small ensemble experience strongly recommended.

Greater New Haven Concert Band

An ensemble of dedicated wind, brass and percussion students performing traditional and contemporary works from the symphonic band repertoire. Generally for grades seven and up with one to three years of individual lessons or the equivalent. Previous band experience strongly recommended.


Preparing for auditions:

  • Prepare a major and a minor scale of your choice with as many octaves as you have studied, preferably including arpeggios.
  • Prepare one piece or two contrasting pieces that demonstrate your best playing abilities.
  • The audition will include sight-reading, Preparation is encouraged.

Ensemble discount:

  • Students taking a Greater New Haven Youth Ensemble (GNHYE) and any other ensemble(s) receive 50 percent off the GNHYE.
  • Students taking a GNHYE, individual lessons and one or more additional ensemble(s) receive 50 percent off the first GNHYE and the Private Plus Ensemble discount on all other ensemble registrations.
  • Students taking two GNHYEs and not individual lessons pay the full price for both ensembles.
  • Participation in a scholarship-based Premier ensemble does not qualify for this discount.
