Drama Classes for Children & Teens

New! Musical Theater Performance Class

Ages 14 and up. From Cole Porter to Kurt Weill, from Rodgers & Hammerstein to Sondheim to Schwartz - if these are some of your favorite American songwriters, then this is the class for you! Students will learn how to personalize their performances by telling a story. This class will also help to develop your vocal technique and confidence! No experience necessary, everyone is welcome!

Acting: Beginners to Bard 

Ages 8 - 10. Young actors will learn the basic principles of acting in a class that incorporates vocal diction and projection, improvisation and scene study, and theater exercises to help build a strong ensemble.

Ages 11 - 13. Slightly older actors will learn the basic principles of acting in a class that incorporates vocal diction and projection, improvisation and scene study, and theater exercises to help build a strong ensemble.

Scene Study*

Ages 14 and up. Work on selected scenes and monologues, perform once a semester for an invited audience. Learn the art of creating a natural environment for the scene and finding the natural energy of the character. No experience necessary.

Practical Acting*

Ages 14 and up. This complement to Scene Study focuses on auditions and other challenges faced by actors, both amateur and professional. Address your needs with highly individualized attention in a supportive group setting. No experience necessary.

*Note: If you register for both Scene Study and Practical Acting, you’ll receive a discount: If you also register for individual music lessons, you’ll receive a further discount. The credit will not appear during the online registration process but will appear later as a credit on your account.

Individual Instruction

We offer individual drama instruction for those wishing to work on specific technique, show or audition preparation. Individual instruction is billed at the regular individual lesson rates.  Please contact Student Services at 203-624-5189.

NEW! NMS Improv Troupe - Tentative

Ages 16 - 18. This exciting and hilarious company will create the greatest plays ever seen by mankind, using the Long Form and kitchen utensils…and perhaps even a rubber chicken. Seriously deranged and incredibly beautiful actors only…THIS MEANS YOU! Performances will be presented bi-weekly during the semester.

NEW! Audition Preparation for Singers - Tentative

Ages 14-18. This Fall, take your performing to the next level at NMS! Whether you're a high school singer preparing to audition for colleges, or you're already on campus competing for your next gig, we'll help you put together a complete and polished audition package. Deborah Lifton, founder of the College Audition Advantage program, will coach participants on character, style, text, and movement to put together a technically grounded and expressively integrated performance. Select winning pieces for your age, voice and personality. For musical theater and classical singers in grades 9-12 (ages 14-18), undergraduate students, or at the discretion of the instructor. Because crossing your fingers is NOT a strategy!

Acting Workshop - Tentative

Age 15 - adult. Have you always wanted to try acting but didn't know where to start - or have you wanted to rekindle your passion for performing? This fun, supportive class, taught by well-known stage, film and television actor Bruce Altman ("Matchstick Men," "Rookie of the Year," "Running Scared" and "The Sopranos"), will give you inspiration and the tools to work with.

Once Upon a Time - Tentative

Ages 5 - 7. Using musical elements, movement and acting, the class will turn a children's book into a musical theater experience. At the end of the semester the children will present a live production that will be sure to delight and amuse.
